Jane recommends...

I LOVE children's books of all kinds and have a particular passion for a beautifully written picture book. I also like serious literary fiction old and new -- I'm a huge Jane Austen fan and am currently reading my way through Ian McEwan's novels. I'm also fond of good literary essays, poetry, and interesting non-fiction on women's history, religion, and animals, among other topics.

The poems in Button Up! are light, clever, and very funny - and don't strain to fit into their bouncing rhyme scenes. Even better, each poem is told from the point of view of an item of clothing. I especially enjoyed "Old T-shirt"!

By Madeleine George
$7.99
ISBN-13: 9780142414194

A work of deep empathy. The use of alternating narrators allows the reader to view the protagonists from both outside and in - and to consider how much physical appearance does and does not reflect a person's inner self. The book is also an exploration of how the emotional lives of teen girls play out through their relationships to food and the body. Don't be fooled by the cover into thinking this is a silly book!!
