National Jewish Book Month Author Panel: "Not Just for Sunday School: Jewish Books for Kids"
11/17/2011 7:00 pm
|
In honor of National Jewish Book Month, four authors of Jewish-themed children's books will be giving a panel discussion at the Wellesley Free Library aimed at parents, educators, and those interested in publishing Jewish-themed books. Guest authors Liz Suneby, Susan Lynn Meyer, Sarah Aronson, and Jane Kohuth will talk about their individual experiences writing and publishing Jewish-themed works across genre, including picture books, novels, and non-fiction. They'll then discuss questions such as, "Is a book with Jews in it a Jewish book?", "Are Jewish books for everyone?", "How do Jewish books engage kids in Jewish values?", "How can Jewish-themed books be used in the classroom?", and "What is the market like for publishing Jewish books?" Their discussion will be moderated by book reviewer Kathleen Bloomfield, founder of forwordsbooks.com. The program will end with a question and answer period followed by a book signing.
ABOUT THE AUTHORS
Liz Suneby is a Childrens' Choice award-winning author. The Mitzvah Project Book,
aimed at tweens/teens and their families, is her first Jewish-themed
book. The book is packed with ideas to help kids connect their interests
and talents to a mitzvah project they can be passionate about. Hundreds
of projects and stories of real kids to spark imaginations and a
planning guide to get off to a good start. Foreword by Rabbi Jeffrey
Salkin and Preface by Rabbi Sharon Brous. |
Susan Lynn Meyer is the author of the middle-reader novel, Black Radishes, winner of the 2010 Sydney Taylor silver medal. Black Radishes, which was inspired by her father's childhood, is about a Jewish boy in Nazi-occupied France. Black Radishes has also been named a Bank Street College of Education Best Children's Book of 2010, a Boston Author's Club 2010 Highly Recommended Book, and a Massachusetts Book Award "Must-Read" Book for 2011. Susan Lynn Meyer is also the author of two picture books, Matthew and Tall Rabbit Go Camping and the forthcoming New Shoes. She is a professor of English at Wellesley College.
Sarah Aronson has worked as a Jewish educator and Jewish book
seller. She earned her MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults from
Vermont College of Fine Arts in 2006. In Beyond Lucky, she set
out to write a story about a regular kid who just happens to be
Jewish.Jewish Book World (starred review) writes that Sarah Aronson
"skillfully captures just the right amount of both torment and elation
in the voice of her young protagonist" and that this book appeals "to
both boys and girls who like contemporary and fast-moving novels that
mirror real life." Find out more about her and her books at:
www.saraharonson.com.
Jane Kohuth graduated from Brandeis University with a degree in
English and Creative Writing and from Harvard Divinity School with a
Master's Degree in Theological Studies. Though not all of what she's
studied makes an appearance in her work (no Biblical Hebrew yet), the
habits of creative thought and curiosity she developed in school help
her every day. She has worked as a Jewish educator, a children's room
library assistant, a writing teacher, and a children's bookseller and
organizer of author events. Estie the Mensch, her first picture book, was inspired in part by the Yiddish she heard at home growing up. Estie has been chosen as a PJ Library book. Jane is also the author of the early reader Ducks Go Vroom as well as the upcoming picture book Duck Sock Hop (Dial 2012).
