Join Hot YA Authors at Fun Fundraiser for Franciscan Hospital for Children

Start: Thu, 03/11/2010 - 6:00pm

End: Thu, 03/11/2010 - 8:00pm

Join Brookline Booksmith, our sister store, and help support a worthwhile fundraiser for only $5 dollars admission. You'll help the Franciscan Hospital for Children!

Three Young Adult Authors: Kelly Link, Cassandra Clare, and Holly Black
A Discussion Panel on Young Adult Fiction with Reader-Submitted Questions
6 PM, Thursday, March 11th
at Brookline Booksmith in the Readers' and Writers' Room ($5)
(Venue Change)

Join three of the hottest writers in the Young Adult field at 6pm on March 11th at the Brookline Booksmith in the Readers' and Writers' Room for a panel discussion celebrating New York Times bestselling author Holly Black's new book, The Poison Eaters and Other Stories. It's not just about having a great time: ticket sales—and 20% of event book sales—will be donated by the Brookline Booksmith to Franciscan Hospital for Children.

Holly Black (Tithe, the Spiderwick Chronicles) will be joined by Kelly Link (Pretty Monsters) and Cassandra Clare (The Mortal Instruments series) for a discussion. This is where it gets interesting: readers, whether they will be attending or not, are invited to email their questions for the authors to hollycassandrakelly@gmail.com. The three authors will begin with a selection of submitted questions and then take questions from the audience.

There will be giveaways for the attendees: The first 100 people in the door will receive a copy of A Working Writer’s Daily Planner. And more! Afterward, the authors will sign their books at the Brookline Booksmith. Refreshments will be served.

WHY A FUNDRAISER:

The panel discussion as fundraiser was suggested by Holly Black who brought her fellow Amherst author, Cassandra Clare, aboard. Black's new book, The Poison Eaters and Other Stories, is being published by Big Mouth House—an independent press run by Kelly Link and her husband, Gavin Grant. Link and Grant's Easthampton, MA, office is in the same shambling old refitted warehouse as Black's office.

While Black's collection was in the planning stages (back in February 2009) Link and Grant's daughter, Ursula was born at 24 weeks and 1 1/2 lbs. Ursula and her parents spent her first five months at Baystate Medical Center, and is now in a pulmonary rehabilitation ward at Franciscan Hospital for Children in Brighton (Boston).

ABOUT FRANCISCAN HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN:

(http://www.franciscanhospital.org):

Through the years, as one of the nation's largest pediatric rehabilitation hospitals, we have expanded our complement of programs and services for children with special health care needs, as well as for children from the local community. Our continuum of care includes inpatient, residential, educational, surgical, outpatient and home care programs, a combination of services for children that is hard to find anywhere else.

** This event has been postponed. We will post the new date as soon as we can. We apologize for the inconvenience. **

The New York Times Book Review called the star of Francisco Stork’s young adult novel Marcelo in the Real World, “the bravest, most original hero I’ve met in years.” Marcelo in the Real World went on to receive 5 starred reviews, to be chosen as a Hornbook Fanfare Book, and to be a Publisher’s Weekly Best Book of 2009.

Now Francisco Stork is coming to our very own Wellesley Booksmith to talk about his work and to introduce his eagerly awaited new novel, The Last Summer of the Death Warriors, which tells the story of Pancho, a teenager plotting the murder of his sister’s killer. Pancho’s life changes when he arrives at St. Anthony’s Home for Boys and meets D.Q., a boy with cancer who introduces him to his personal philosophy of life, which he calls the “Death Warrior’s Manifesto.” As Pancho and D.Q.’s friendship grows, both their lives will change forever.

Francisco Stork was born in Monterrey, Mexico and was raised in El Paso, Texas. A practicing attorney for an affordable housing agency, he lives with his wife near Boston.
Meet Sarah Lamstein, local children's book author

On a rainy night in early spring, spotted salamanders by the hundreds crawl out of the woods and down to a vernal pool where they mate and lay their eggs. But what if a road interrupts the salamanders’ path to the pool?

Author Sarah Lamstein joined volunteers young and old in helping the salamanders cross the road, and found that the children are the most eager helpers. This happy intersection between child and critter is what she writes about in her new picture book, Big Night for Salamanders, which she’ll share as part of an interactive presentation on Sunday March 21st at Wellesley Booksmith

Sarah is the author of several picture books, a folktale collection, and a novel for young readers. Her most recent book, Letter on the Wind, was a Sidney Taylor Honor Book in 2008. She lives right down the road in Newton. Visit Sarah's website at www.sarahlamstein.com.

Are you a fairy-tale fan? Do you have a princess-story loving little one? Then you’ll want to check out The Goat-Faced Girl, a reinterpretation of a classic Italian fairy-tale and the debut picture book for mother and daughter author/illustrator team, Leah Marinksy Sharpe and Jane Marinsky.

They’ve started off with a bang, receiving starred reviews from several major publications, including Publisher’s Weekly, which cites “rich storytelling and intricately designed artwork,” and calls the book “a must for anyone who would rather be a sorceress than a princess.” We’re excited to have this dynamic duo visit us at Wellesley Booksmith on Sunday, March 28th to share their book and talk about the process of creating their work of art.
