In DIABETES RISING: How a Rare Disease Became a Modern Pandemic, and What to Do About It, Dan Hurley, award-winning medical writer and type 1 diabetic, takes readers to the frontlines of the diabetes crisis, and delivers the first investigative account of the disease's alarming rise and the quest for its true causes and cures. Pushing past the worn-out conventional wisdom about a disease that is now ten times more common than it was a hundred years ago—and projected to affect one in three Americans — Diabetes Rising reveals how a small band of passionate, fiercely determined scientists, advocates and public-policy strategists are struggling against orthodoxy to bring diabetes to its knees. Please RSVP to 781.431.1160 or email events@wellesleybooksmith.com if you are planning on attending. Thank you!

Come hear Kelly Corrigan, author of the best-selling, heart-warming memoir The Middle Place. Kelly will be speaking about her new book Lift, a tiny but powerful meditation on parenting and the love that will keep you fighting longer and harder than you ever thought possible. Prepare to be inspired by Kelly Corrigan, mother of two, journalist, & sought-after keynote speaker. This event is co-sponsored by the Ellie Fund. Books will be available for sale at the library; and, Wellesley Booksmith will donate 10% of the sales to The Ellie Fund. ABOUT THE BOOK Lift is written in the form of a letter to her children. .Intimate and reflective, she conjures up the moments she will never forget, but that her girls may well fail to remember as adults: teaching her daughter how to spell her own last name, long games of “I Spy,” watching the Jackson 5 on YouTube. She reveals, beautifully, how mundanely and fiercely her children have been loved, how close most lives occasionally come to disaster, and even how often we fall short as mothers and fathers. Lift is not just her story. Kelly tells the story of when her own tiny infant daughter was in the ICU unit fighting for her life, and also her best friend’s struggle over whether or not she would become a single parent, and her cousin’s inspiring family and the loss they had to survive. It is honest, sometimes funny, and filled with moments that just ring true. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Journalist Kelly Corrigan is the author of the New York Times bestseller The Middle Place. She is a YouTube sensation whose beloved “Transcending” video was sent woman-to-woman to more than 4 million viewers. She is also a contributor to O, The Oprah Magazine and is the founder of CircusofCancer.org. She lives in Oakland, California, with her husband and daughters, where she volunteers for the Children’s Hospital.

Join Brookline Booksmith, our sister store, and help support a worthwhile fundraiser for only $5 dollars admission. You'll help the Franciscan Hospital for Children!
Three Young Adult Authors: Kelly Link, Cassandra Clare, and Holly Black
Holly Black (Tithe, the Spiderwick Chronicles) will be joined by Kelly Link (Pretty Monsters) and Cassandra Clare (The Mortal Instruments series) for a discussion. This is where it gets interesting: readers, whether they will be attending or not, are invited to email their questions for the authors to hollycassandrakelly@gmail.com. The three authors will begin with a selection of submitted questions and then take questions from the audience. There will be giveaways for the attendees: The first 100 people in the door will receive a copy of A Working Writer’s Daily Planner. And more! Afterward, the authors will sign their books at the Brookline Booksmith. Refreshments will be served. WHY A FUNDRAISER: The panel discussion as fundraiser was suggested by Holly Black who brought her fellow Amherst author, Cassandra Clare, aboard. Black's new book, The Poison Eaters and Other Stories, is being published by Big Mouth House—an independent press run by Kelly Link and her husband, Gavin Grant. Link and Grant's Easthampton, MA, office is in the same shambling old refitted warehouse as Black's office. While Black's collection was in the planning stages (back in February 2009) Link and Grant's daughter, Ursula was born at 24 weeks and 1 1/2 lbs. Ursula and her parents spent her first five months at Baystate Medical Center, and is now in a pulmonary rehabilitation ward at Franciscan Hospital for Children in Brighton (Boston). ABOUT FRANCISCAN HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN: (http://www.franciscanhospital.org): Since 1949 Franciscan Hospital for Children has pioneered clinical, therapeutic and educational programs for children with a variety of disabilities. Through the years, as one of the nation's largest pediatric rehabilitation hospitals, we have expanded our complement of programs and services for children with special health care needs, as well as for children from the local community. Our continuum of care includes inpatient, residential, educational, surgical, outpatient and home care programs, a combination of services for children that is hard to find anywhere else. Start: 7:30 pm
End: 9:00 pm
Join two Needham residents, journalist/author Jim Hirsch and WBUR's Bill Littlefield, host of "Only a Game," for a presentation and discussion based on Jim's latest book, "Willie Mays," which has hit number 5 on the New York Times Bestseller list for nonfiction books! In his research for the book, Hirsch interviewed former President Bill Clinton, Woody Allen, Henry Aaron, Barry Bonds, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and many others, according to his wife Sheryl Hirsch. The book has also been featured on numerous radio and TV programs, including "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart." They will be at the Needham Public Library at 7:30 pm.

On a rainy night in early spring, spotted salamanders by the hundreds crawl out of the woods and down to a vernal pool where they mate and lay their eggs. But what if a road interrupts the salamanders’ path to the pool? Author Sarah Lamstein joined volunteers young and old in helping the salamanders cross the road, and found that the children are the most eager helpers. This happy intersection between child and critter is what she writes about in her new picture book, Big Night for Salamanders, which she’ll share as part of an interactive presentation on Sunday March 21st at Wellesley Booksmith Sarah is the author of several picture books, a folktale collection, and a novel for young readers. Her most recent book, Letter on the Wind, was a Sidney Taylor Honor Book in 2008. She lives right down the road in Newton. Visit Sarah's website at www.sarahlamstein.com.

Are you a fairy-tale fan? Do you have a princess-story loving little one? Then you’ll want to check out The Goat-Faced Girl, a reinterpretation of a classic Italian fairy-tale and the debut picture book for mother and daughter author/illustrator team, Leah Marinksy Sharpe and Jane Marinsky. They’ve started off with a bang, receiving starred reviews from several major publications, including Publisher’s Weekly, which cites “rich storytelling and intricately designed artwork,” and calls the book “a must for anyone who would rather be a sorceress than a princess.” We’re excited to have this dynamic duo visit us at Wellesley Booksmith on Sunday, March 28th to share their book and talk about the process of creating their work of art. Leah Marinsky Sharpe, a doctoral candidate focusing on the management of aquatic species, lives in Vermont. Her mother, Jane Marinsky has been an editorial illustrator for many years and teached illustration at Daemen College in Amherst, New York. She spends her winters in Buffalo, New York and summers in Vermont.
