Wellesley Booksmith is excited to host the launch party for long-time customer Alexandra Bullen's debut young adult novel, Wish. We will celebrate on Sunday, January 17th, at 2 PM! In Wish, Alexandra Bullen takes readers to the foggy, enigmatic city of San Francisco for a magical, modern-day fairytale. Olivia Larsen is brokenhearted after the loss of her twin sister Violet. Her parents have picked up and moved her from their warm family home in the Northeast to unfamiliar San Francisco to make a new start. But without her vivacious sister at her side, Olivia finds it difficult to make friends in her new school, and at home everything feels uncomfortable and tense. Alone and adrift, she stumbles into a tiny dressmaker’s shop in a hidden corner of the city, and everything Olivia thought she knew about reality is changed forever. Olivia receives three beautiful dresses—and three wishes. One wish could bring her sister back, another may lead to true love, and another might force Olivia to confront her darkest fears. But Olivia must wish carefully, and from the heart, because what you think you want may not always be what you need. Alexandra Bullen has been a playwright, waitress, barista, gardener, script reader, yoga instructor, and personal assistant. She grew up in Massachusetts, went to college in New York City, and lives most of the year on Martha’s Vineyard (except when she’s visiting San Francisco). | ||

A bit jittery about investing? Every move seems risky? Investment industry veteran Mike Carpenter can help. Join Mike for a (surprisingly) fun evening in which you'll learn how to bring well-honed risk management strategies into your investing life - and beyond - on Thursday, January 21, 2010 at 7:00 PM at the Wellesley Free Library. He'll be talking about his empowering book, The Risk Wise Investor: How to Better Understand and Manage Risk which offers user-friendly risk management tools, tips, and techniques for a less certain world. Though a very high level of investor uncertainty, anxiety, and concern about risk now exists, the vast majority of investors do not genuinely understand investment risk-let alone how to effectively manage it. The Risk-Wise Investor offers a totally new, user-friendly, non-technical way to help you better understand and manage uncertainty and risk. This practical guide will help investors avoid many common pitfalls and make well informed, knowledge-based decisions when facing uncertainty and risk.

What will Rebecca Stead be doing now that she's JUST been awarded the Newbery Medal for her fantastic novel When You Reach Me? She's coming to Wellesley! Meet this lovely, charming, AWARD-WINNING author on Tuesday, February 9th at 6 PM at the Wellesley Free Library, and discover why we've been recommending When You Reach Me to every reader within earshot. A mystery, a tale of time travel, a story about growing up, and an homage to the classic novel A Wrinkle in Time, When You Reach Me follows Miranda, a 6th grader in New York City in the late 1970s. Miranda's life is normal (if you call having your best friend ignore you and your mom training to be on a game show "normal"). Then Miranda receives a note that changes her life forever. It reads: I am coming to save your friend's life, and my own. I must ask two favors. First you must write me a letter. Like her heroine, Rebecca Stead grew up in New York City, where she was lucky enough to attend the kind of elementary school where a person could sit on a windowsill, or even under a table, and read a book, and no one told you to come out and be serious. Learn more about her and her books at www.rebeccasteadbooks.com.
